The burn was real; exacerbated by the sweat and humidity. We had been walking all morning and now searched for a place to pause, reset and satisfy the hunger pangs. In truth, what we really needed most was some shade.

I, surprisingly, heard today that the furthest some Californians had walked for waves was about a mile. Some of my fondest memories are of walking for hours on a hot day through farms and along a creek to where it meets the beach. From there the mission continues, up over a headland and around the bay only to walk back to surf the first bit of beach. The thing about farms are the large expanses of grass…when sometimes all you need is a tree.
